I’m Emma Castrén. I’m an actress and theatre artist (FIA, TeM) who graduated from the
Helsinki Theatre Academy and Jacques Lecoq School. I currently live in Helsinki and work
as a freelancer.
I have worked versatilely both on theatre stages, in front of the camera, as a writer and intimacy coordinator. 
I’m a permanent member of the contemporary circus group Kallo Collective, the “Kalevala
Nuclear Physics” group of the “Kalevala alive or dead” project, and one of the founding
members of the Löylylyylit group. In addition to these, I visit various working groups
and institutional theatres. I have acted in several short films, music videos and small roles
in TV series. I would love to do more camera work! I have created, produced and scripted
my own touring solo work The Gynecologist. (A co-production between Tehdas Theatre
and Kallo Collective, more information in the Works tab.)
I speak English and French fluently as well as some Spanish and Swedish. In addition to
Finland, I have worked on various projects in France, Germany, Ireland and Portugal.
In my work I like to take advantage of my musicality; I play piano and sing. I can also
accompany on the ukulele, and if necessary I will also master a new instrument, language
or skill.
During my free time I think about, prepare and eat vegan food, release my energy into the
strangest whims of the moment, read and study on topics that interest me at the time and stare at the wall.
What really gets me going are stories. My task is to be at the service of the story and to
give it interesting starting points to come alive in front of an audience or the camera. I
always get excited about artistic thinking and processes, and I have plenty of ideas. My
work is only possible in cooperation with others, and that is actually the most wonderful
thing about my work: thinking together, imagining together.
